Chemical Evolution of Heavy Elements in the Early Galaxy: Implications for Stellar Sources

چکیده

An overview of the sources for heavy elements in the early Galaxy is given. It is shown that observations of abundances in metal-poor stars can be used along with a basic understanding of stellar models to guide the search for the source of the heavy r-process nuclei (r-nuclei). Observations show that this source produces very little of the elements from C through Zn including Fe. This strongly suggests that O-Ne-Mg core-collapse supernovae (SNe) from progenitors of ∼ 8–11M⊙ are the source for the heavy r-nuclei. It is shown that a two-component model based on the abundances of Fe (from Fe core-collapse SNe) and Eu (from O-Ne-Mg core-collapse SNe) gives very good quantitative predictions for the abundances of all the other elements in metal-poor stars.

Stellar Populations in the Central Galaxies of Fossil Groups

It is inferred from the symmetrical and luminous X-ray emission of fossil groups that they are mature, relaxed galaxy systems. Cosmological simulations and observations focusing on their dark halo and inter-galactic medium properties confirm their early formation. Recent photometric observations suggest that, unlike the majority of non-fossil brightest group galaxies (BGGs), the central early-t...

The Light Elements Be and B as Stellar Chronometers in the Early Galaxy

Recent detailed simulations of Galactic Chemical Evolution have shown that the heavy elements, in particular [Fe/H], are expected to exhibit a weak, or absent, correlation with stellar ages in the early Galaxy due to the lack of efficient mixing of interstellar material enriched by individual Type II supernovae. A promising alternative "chronometer" of stellar ages is suggested, based on the ex...

Pulsating red giant and supergiant stars in the Local Group dwarf galaxy Andromeda I

We have conducted an optical long-term monitoring survey of the majority of dwarf galaxies in the Local Group, with the Isaac Newton Telescope (INT), to identify the long period variable (LPV) stars. LPV stars vary on timescales of months to years, and reach the largest amplitudes of their brightness variations at optical wavelengths, due to the changing temperature. They trace stellar populati...

Petrology and geochemistry of Aligoodarz granitoid, Western Iran: implications for petrogenetic relation with Boroujerd and Dehno granitoids

The Aligoodarz granitoid occurs in Sanandaj-Sirjan Zone (SSZ), Western Iran. Tonalite, granodiorite and granite are the main rock types cropping out in the area. Comparison of Aligoodarz granitoid with Dehno and Boroujerd granitoids reveals several similarities in their chemical characteristics. Thus, the above mentioned granitoids can be assigned as a co-genetic magmatic suite, in which pluton...
